    Be sure to take in a live summer outdoor performance of The Lost Colony, a family-friendly play that tells the story of the first, and ultimately ill-fated, English settlement in the new world. In 1587, 117 men, women and children established a settlement, founded by Sir Walter Raleigh, on a site very near the current location of the outdoor theater. In one of our country’s greatest mysteries, every one of them had disappeared without a trace.

    Celebrate man’s love of flight with two days of kite regattas at the Wright Brothers National Memorial in Kill Devil Hills. Large animal shaped single line kites as well as other large kites of various shapes and sizes soar high over the monument. Below, experienced staff members offer free stunt and power kite lessons and children’s kite making classes. All are encouraged to bring their own kites and let them fly.

    Nothing says summer on the Outer Banks like games, food, music and, of course, tons of sweet local watermelon. Activities include a dunk tank, corn hole tournaments, face painting and watermelon-related competitions like seed spitting, watermelon eating and a watermelon ice cream eating race.

It’s a free event that celebrates Outer Banks’ maritime history and pirate legends with face painting, treasure hunts and pirate battles. Also, make sure your little ones experience the Pirate Scalawag School for Kids, the world’s premier training grounds for youngsters looking to join Blackbeard’s crew.

    With a 12-second flight on a windy December 17, 1903, Ohio brothers Orville and Wilbur Wright began a journey to conquer the skies that continues to this day. This daylong celebration of their first flight in Kill Devil Hills features a presentation of colors, a stirring rendition of the National Anthem, educational sessions featuring renowned historians, a keynote address, several museum activities and exhibits designed specifically for the day and a stirring aviation fly-by at the exact moment the original flight occurred.
